FCA to invest heavily in Maserati, Alfa Romeo luxury brands

Though they've been cash-starved for decades, Italian luxury brands Alfa Romeo and Maserati may have a bright future. That's according to the five-year plan revealed Friday by Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, which owns the two Italian divisions. FCA indicated that Maserati will continue to push upmarket, while Alfa Romeo will branch out with a new subcompact crossover SUV, a full-size crossover SUV, and a sporty coupe which will reboot the historic GTV nameplate. In addition to its Stelvio compact crossover, Alfa plans by 2022 to offer a smaller model that would square off against the BMW X1 and the Volvo XC40. An extended version of the Stelvio, possibly with three rows of seats, will expand the company's first crossover SUV nameplate. Nearly 15 years after Fiat Chrysler Automobiles CEO Sergio Marchionne took the reins of the global automaker, the only consistent force within the company has been change. On Friday, Marchionne and other FCA executives outlined a broad plan to focus heavily on worldwide sales of Jeep, Alfa Romeo, and Maserati, while letting other brands such as Fiat and Chrysler somewhat wither. The plan is focused heavily on utility sales to bolster the company's position. Sometimes, the road less traveled requires getting a little dirty. Enter the 2018 Subaru Crosstrek and the 2018 Jeep Compass, two small crossovers that aim to deliver a lot in small packages. Both models are new for 2018 and they bring rugged style and versatility, if not stump-pulling performance. In our eyes, the 2018 Crosstrek’s the one to have; it rates a 7.2 out of 10. It’s a Subaru Impreza with a lift kit and unpainted fender flares. It’s simple and a little homely, but it looks like it’s right out of an REI catalog. The Compass is smooth and shapely, looking something like a Grand Cherokee that was left in the dryer for too long. In Compass Trailhawk guise, it wears its meaty tires and red-painted accents with pride.
